I use a shared library for the elements that will be in 50 different flash files. The link works when I publish the movie; but if I change a symbol in the common library (ex change circle from red to green) the linked movie library still shows the old version (red circle), and on the stage too.

I really suspect you are opening window/common libraries rather than window/library. If my suspicion is not correct try a simple test to see if it works as it should; Open a new movie and then open the library (window/library - not window/common libraries). There should be no symbols in the current movie library
